Has anybody noticed how the experience at many Starbucks coffee shops has been in a slow and steady decline. I remember a time not too long ago that the stores and staff were friendly, efficient, and seemed to care about what they were doing. Starbucks is known as a great employer (benefits/part-time staff roles/etc.), but the “coolness”, convenience and efficiency has just turned for the worse or in some cases disappeared.

Lately, it seems like you get in a queue (usually very long one) wait and wait to tell a cash register attendant your drink order, receive the “cross-sell” for pastries, pay, and then go stand in yet another line with all the people you have just been standing behind and watch to see if any orders get mixed up. Actually, the second area is not really a line its is more of a “huddling masses/human mashup” of people jostling to get their drinks, add sugar and milk products, etc.
One has to wonder or believe that there is better way to get a coffee in the morning. Like make it at home! Maybe it is just the store closest to me, but I have noticed a material downturn over the past year. Did the delays and chaos begin because of the growing over diversification of food offerings? Granted many of the treats are good with coffee, but aren’t the coffee orders that people ask for complicated enough? And, who by the way is actually buying entire whole loaves of bread and pies?
Starbuck’s needs to either figure out a self-service section verse full service section or hire more staff to manage the peak times because the experience is really no different than a McDonalds at this point. Okay, maybe the background Muzak is little better.
